“Best value safari we found anywhere, and it never felt budget. Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Zanzibar - flawless from start to finish.”
A Lake Manyara day trip proves Hemingway right: he called this the loveliest lake in Africa. Squeezed between the Rift Valley escarpment and a soda lake that turns pink with flamingos, Manyara packs jungle, plains, hippo pools and tree-climbing lions into a park you can do justice to in a single day from Arusha.
The park announces itself strangely. You enter not savannah but jungle: a groundwater forest fed by springs from the escarpment, loud with blue monkeys and silvery-cheeked hornbills, where baboon troops two hundred strong groom and squabble along the road.
The forest opens onto floodplains where the celebrities may be overhead rather than on the ground. Manyara's lions climb acacia and mahogany, a habit shared with only a couple of populations in Africa. Look for them draped along a branch in the early afternoon heat.
Elephants amble through in family herds, and the hippo pools at the Simba River outflow stack dozens of animals nose to tail.
Along the shoreline, thousands of lesser flamingos shimmer pink in season, among more than 400 recorded bird species. For a different angle, add the treetop walkway: 370 metres of suspended bridges through the canopy, the only walk of its kind in Tanzania.

This is where Iain Douglas-Hamilton pioneered the modern study of elephant behaviour in the 1960s, learning hundreds of individuals by name. That work changed conservation permanently.
The park is compact, which is exactly its charm as a day trip. Ten minutes past the gate you are in deep forest; twenty more and you are watching hippos.

Manyara rewards patience and a good guide. The lions are found by scanning branches, not roads.
Dry season concentrates wildlife and keeps tracks firm. The green months trade some game density for spectacular birding. The park is compact, so this is one of the least tiring full days on the circuit. Park details at TANAPA.
Manyara is the gateway to two of our best add-ons: the night game drive after dark, and the canoeing safari on the water.
