**Lake Manyara National Park** packs an astonishing variety of landscapes into a compact area at the foot of the Great Rift Valley escarpment. In a single day you can travel from groundwater forest alive with baboons and blue monkeys, through open woodland, to the shores of the soda lake itself.
The park is famous for its **tree-climbing lions**, an unusual behaviour rarely seen elsewhere, and for the vast flocks of **flamingos** that gather on the alkaline lake. Elephants, giraffe, buffalo and huge troops of baboon are all common, and the birdlife - over 400 species - is exceptional. Manyara makes a perfect first or last stop on a northern-circuit safari.
