“Best value safari we found anywhere, and it never felt budget. Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Zanzibar - flawless from start to finish.”
An Arusha National Park day trip packs more variety into one day than any other park in northern Tanzania: a guided walking safari beneath giant fig trees, a game drive around the alkaline Momella Lakes, and on clear mornings both Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro on the horizon at once.
We leave Arusha at 08:00 in a private 4x4 with a pop-up roof. The gate is barely an hour away, which means more time among the animals and none of the long transfers of the bigger parks.
The morning is on foot. Accompanied by an armed TANAPA ranger, you walk between grazing giraffe, buffalo and warthog, which feels entirely different from watching them through a window.
The route passes waterfalls and huge strangler figs, and runs two to four unhurried hours depending on your energy. Black-and-white colobus monkeys tumble through the canopy overhead; this is the most reliable park in Tanzania to see them.
After a picnic lunch we switch to a classic game drive: the jade-and-pink Momella Lakes with their flamingos and hippo, the forest-ringed Ngurdoto Crater, and open glades where over 400 bird species have been recorded.

The signature frames arrive quickly: the drive-through Fig Tree Arch, curtains of Spanish moss in the montane forest, flamingo lines mirrored in the Momella shallows, and with October to February luck, Kilimanjaro floating pink at dawn behind grazing zebra.
Arusha sees a fraction of the Serengeti's traffic, so you often have these scenes to yourself and your guide can linger as long as the light deserves.

The walk is gentle and on good trails, but closed shoes are essential and long trousers are wise for grassy sections.
Mornings at 1,500 m start cool and warm fast. The park is quiet compared with the Serengeti circuit, so many days you have the trails almost to yourselves. Entry fees are included in our quote. Park page at TANAPA.
Fancy the water instead? Swap the afternoon drive for a paddle on the Momella Lakes with our canoeing safari, or make it a training day before a Kilimanjaro climb.
What to bring:
A small Arusha-based team. Your guide is briefed on your interests by name, our 4x4s carry pop-up roofs and cool boxes as standard, and no day trip is pooled with strangers unless you ask.
Private departures run daily with an English-speaking driver-guide. It pairs well with the Arusha City Tour the day before. Request this trip and we will hold your date.
