A Nairobi National Park safari is the planet's strangest, most wonderful commute: seven kilometres from downtown, black rhinos graze while skyscrapers glitter on the horizon. Gazetted in 1946 as Kenya's first national park, its 117 km2 of plains and acacia valleys hold four of the Big Five.
We enter at first light, when lions are still moving and the light is honey-gold against the city skyline. It is the photographic signature no other park on Earth can offer.
The park is one of Kenya's most important rhino sanctuaries, breeding black rhinos that restock reserves nationwide, and sightings here are among the most reliable anywhere.
The plains carry giraffe, buffalo, eland, zebra, hartebeest and cheetah, while leopards work the wooded valleys along the Mbagathi River. Over 500 bird species have been recorded, with European migrants swelling the list from November to April.
History stops add depth: the Ivory Burning Site, where Kenya first torched its confiscated stockpile in 1989, and the ranger-escorted walking trail at the hippo pools.
A half-day drive covers the park's heart. The full-day version adds the animal orphanage and an unhurried picnic under the acacias.
The southern boundary is deliberately unfenced, opening into the Kitengela corridor through which wildebeest and zebra still disperse seasonally as they have for millennia.
That geography gives the park real conservation weight beyond its skyline novelty. For photographers, the classic shot is a rhino or giraffe framed against the towers of the CBD, best in the first golden hour when the haze is low.
Dawn matters here more than in most parks. Predators retire early and the light show against the skyline is a sunrise event.
The park works brilliantly as a layover safari. We collect from airport or hotel, and a half day fits between most flight pairs with room to spare.
