Ngorongoro Crater Rim Walk

Nature & WaterfallsNgorongoro

The Ngorongoro Crater rim walk gives you what no game drive can: standing still, wind in the heather, with the world's largest intact caldera dropping 600 metres away at your feet. Far below, the crater floor spreads out like a living map, elephant herds as slow grey dots and the soda lake a smear of flamingo pink.

What to Expect on the Crater Rim Walk

There are two ways to walk the rim, and we arrange both.

The classic option is a 90-minute naturalist walk along the rim forest edge. Easy underfoot, rich in birds, orchids and giant heather, with constantly shifting angles down into the caldera. It slots into any crater itinerary without costing you a game drive.

The longer western-rim trek is the connoisseur's version: several hours on old Maasai herding trails that circle the caldera, sharing the path with herders, their cattle, and the occasional eland or zebra.

An armed NCAA ranger walks with every group. This is genuinely wild country, and buffalo and elephant cross the rim trails at will.

Altitude is the quiet challenge. The rim stands around 2,300 m, so the air is thin, mornings are cold enough for gloves, and the afternoon sun still burns.

What You Are Standing On

The caldera below you is the floor of a volcano that may once have rivalled Kilimanjaro before it collapsed inward some two and a half million years ago. It is the largest intact, unflooded caldera on Earth.

Up on the rim the ecology is pure Afro-montane: giant heather and St John's wort, sunbirds working the proteas, augur buzzards hanging on updrafts that pour out of the crater like a slow breath. The trails follow routes Maasai herders have used for generations, so you walk through a working landscape rather than past it.

Good to Know Before You Go

Moderate fitness covers either version. The ground is uneven rather than steep.

Layers are the secret: rim mornings can be near-freezing, midday is T-shirt warm, and the sun at altitude is fierce. Sturdy shoes, sun cream and two litres of water are non-negotiable.

Rim walks are permitted only with an official ranger, which we arrange with your NCAA fees. Regulations at NCAA.

The natural pairing is a crater game drive the same day, or the Maasai village visit.

What to bring:

  • Layered clothing
  • Sturdy walking shoes
  • Sun hat and high-SPF cream
  • 2 litres of water
  • Binoculars and camera
  • Walking poles if you like them
