A Hadzabe tribe tour is the most remarkable cultural day Tanzania offers. At Lake Eyasi, south of the Ngorongoro Highlands, the Hadzabe still live as hunter-gatherers, one of the last peoples on Earth who do, speaking a click language and moving camp with the game.
The day starts before dawn, because the Hadzabe hunt at first light. After the drive down from Karatu you meet your interpreter and walk into the bush with the men and their hand-made bows.
Whatever the morning brings, honey coaxed from a baobab, a bird taken with a poisoned arrow, or nothing at all, it is entirely real. There is no performance here.
You learn to make fire with two sticks, try the bows yourself, which is harder than it looks, and hear the click language spoken around the fire.
By late morning you move to a Datoga homestead. Skilled pastoralists and famous metalworkers, the Datoga melt scrap into arrowheads and jewellery using goat-skin bellows and charcoal. These are the same arrowheads the Hadzabe trade honey for.
Seeing both in one day is the point: hunter-gatherer and herder-smith, two ancient answers to the same land.
Tourism income, paid directly rather than through brokers, strengthens the Hadzabe's claim to their land corridors at a time when farming and cattle press in from every side. The families choose each morning whether and how to host visitors.
Lake Eyasi deserves the drive in its own right: a shimmering soda lake below the Rift wall, fringed with doum palms, with dawn light photographers dream about.
This is a genuine cultural exchange, not a show. Some mornings the hunt succeeds and some it does not, and sensitive travellers should know a successful hunt may be part of the day.
Our fees are paid directly to the communities through long-standing agreements, and your interpreter will guide respectful photography. Always ask first.
The early start is non-negotiable. By mid-morning the Hadzabe are done hunting and the light is harsh.
Lake Eyasi combines naturally with the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and many guests visit en route between Karatu and the crater.
What to bring:
A small Arusha-based team. Your guide is briefed on your interests by name, and no day trip is pooled with strangers unless you ask. Most of our guests arrive by word of mouth.
