**Saanane Island National Park** is the smallest national park in Tanzania and the only one located within a city - a peaceful rocky island just off the shore of **Mwanza** on Lake Victoria. Once a small zoo, it was gazetted as a national park in 2013 and today offers a gentle, low-key wildlife escape.
The island’s huge granite boulders, quiet walking trails and lake views make it a lovely half-day outing. Impala, rock hyrax, vervet monkeys, wallabies of the reptile world - monitor lizards - and a variety of birds can be seen on foot, and the sunsets over Lake Victoria are memorable. It is an easy, relaxing stop for anyone travelling through Mwanza or heading to the western Serengeti.
