**Mikumi National Park** is the most accessible of Tanzania’s southern parks and a wonderful introduction to the region’s wilder circuit. Lying on the surfaced highway between Dar es Salaam and the south, it can be reached in a few hours’ drive, making it ideal for shorter safaris and weekend escapes.
The park’s open **Mkata Floodplain** is often compared to the Serengeti in miniature, with excellent visibility for game viewing. Herds of elephant, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and impala roam the plains, alongside giraffe, lion and the occasional leopard. Hippos wallow in the pools near the park gate, and the birdlife is rich and varied. For travellers short on time who still want a genuine, big-game safari, Mikumi delivers.
