Chemka Hot Springs

Water & AdventureKilimanjaro

The Chemka Hot Springs day trip is northern Tanzania's favourite rest day: a startling turquoise pool that rises from Kilimanjaro's underground rivers, ringed by giant fig trees full of monkeys. After a dusty safari or a hard trek, few things feel better than this water.

What to Expect at Chemka Hot Springs

Chemka means boiling in Swahili, but the joke is on the name. The water is not hot, just perfectly warm, filtered through volcanic rock from Kilimanjaro's snows and emerging crystal clear.

In places the pool is ten metres deep, yet you can count pebbles on the bottom. Tilapia nibble harmlessly at your toes, and the brave take the rope swing from the fig branches.

The drive is half the fun: about an hour from Moshi through sunflower fields and Maasai rangeland, the last stretch bumpy enough to feel like an adventure. Blue monkeys and vervets watch from the trees when you arrive.

We set up a shaded base by the water. Lunch is the classic Tanzanian combination, chips mayai and grilled meat from the riverside BBQ, and the afternoon is yours: swim, doze in a hammock, or wander to the spring source where the river simply appears out of the ground.

Where the Water Comes From

Rain and snowmelt from Kilimanjaro sink into porous volcanic rock and travel underground for years, decades by some estimates, before surfacing at Chemka filtered to perfect clarity and a constant, blissful warmth.

For a slower version, ask about the overnight option: tents by the pool, a campfire, a bush dinner and a dawn swim before the day-trippers arrive. Either way the springs support the surrounding villages directly through entry fees and the kitchen crew grilling your lunch.

Good to Know Before You Go

Bring swimwear, a towel and water shoes if you have them, since rocks near the edge can be slippery.

The pool is deep. Confident swimmers can leap from the swing, cautious paddlers stay by the shallow entry steps, and life jackets are available on site.

Weekdays are blissfully quiet; weekends bring local families and a livelier feel. There is a modest local entry fee, which we include.

Chemka slots perfectly between bigger days: after summiting via the Marangu route, or before a Tarangire day trip.

What to bring:

  • Swimwear and towel
  • Water shoes or sandals
  • Dry change of clothes
  • Waterproof phone pouch
  • Sunscreen
  • Cash for drinks
